Privacy Policy
Last updated 2026-06-16. We don't sell your data, and we use analytics only to improve the site — never for advertising.
1. What we collect
To use an account, we need your email address and a randomly generated account ID. Everything else is optional and added by you as you use the app: a display name, preferred language, dietary tags, the recipes, notes, and meal plans you save, the people in your household, photos you upload, and push-notification keys (only if you turn notifications on). If you contact us, we keep your message and the details needed to reply. When you accept these terms, we record the version, date, your IP address, and browser details as a consent record.
2. Why we collect it
To make the service work — sign you in, show your household's content, send the sign-in code you asked for, run your membership, and share your meal plan with the people you've invited. If you opt in to marketing, we also use your email to send occasional recipe ideas and product news.
3. How we share it
We share your data only with the people you invite into your household, and with the providers we use to run the service — for database and sign-in, email delivery, image storage, web hosting, and website analytics. If you use Google sign-in, that goes through Google; if you start a membership or make a payment, that goes through our payment provider, Airwallex. To understand and improve how the site is used, we use Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity. These providers may process data outside Hong Kong. The CookWhatHK admin team may read messages you send through the contact form.
4. Payment data
If you buy a membership, our payment provider, Airwallex, handles your card details. We keep the records needed to run your membership — such as the payer, plan status, renewal dates, the provider's customer and payment-consent IDs, receipts, refunds, failed payments, and cancellation status. We never store your full card number.
5. Marketing email
We only send marketing email if you've opted in — it's off by default. You can unsubscribe anytime: every marketing email has a one-click link, and there's a toggle in your /profile settings. Sign-in codes and important account or billing notices aren't marketing; you'll always receive them, because the service can't work without them.
6. Retention and deletion
We keep your account data while your account exists. You can delete your account from /profile at any time; we then remove or anonymise your personal data within 30 days, except limited records we must keep for legal, security, or billing-dispute reasons. Shared household content may stay visible to other members unless it's deleted separately. Consent and billing records are kept only as long as reasonably needed.
7. Your rights
Under Hong Kong's Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, you can ask to access and correct your personal data. You can view, update, or delete most of it directly in /profile; for anything else — corrections, exports, or detailed deletion requests — reach us via /contact. We aim to respond within 30 days.
8. Cookies
We use essential cookies and similar storage to keep you signed in, remember basic settings like your language, and protect the service. To understand how the site is used and improve it, we also use analytics: Vercel Web Analytics (cookieless), Google Analytics, and Microsoft Clarity. Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity may set cookies; Clarity also records anonymised interactions on our own pages — like clicks, scrolling, and mouse movement — to show us where the experience can be better, with text you type masked by default. We use these only to improve CookWhatHK; we don't sell your data or use it for cross-site advertising.
9. How we protect data
We limit access to personal data to the people who need it to run or support the service, and we use providers with security controls for hosting, authentication, email, storage, and payments. No online service can be perfectly secure, so please keep your email account safe.
Want a copy of your data, a correction, or full deletion? Email support@cookwhathk.com, or ask us via the contact form.
